Watch Cartoons in Spanish
If you are trying to learn or improve your Spanish you’ve probably tried watching tv or movies in Spanish. I’m sure most of you have flipped the channel over to Univision or decided to play a movie in Spanish just to find out that you didn’t understand even the gist of it! Real Spanish tv is made for adult Spanish speakers and therefore, very difficult for a Spanish learner to understand, especially if your Spanish level is beginner or intermediate. Also, many times to enjoy a movie you need to understand everything that is said, and if you miss one important thing you could end up being completely lost in the movie and not enjoy it at all in Spanish.
So, these two things lead to disappointment and can discourage you. What you need is something more on your level! And as adults we often don’t think of it but watching cartoons in a foreign language is one of the best ways to get our ears adjusted to native speakers and enjoy doing it at the same time.
Even if you don’t understand every word, or even most of it for that matter, you can still understand what is going on and you will be learning every time you watch an episode. If you are a beginner I’d advise you to watch an episode two or three times, which isn’t as time consuming as it may sound. A typical cartoon episode lasts 10 minutes. So you can watch an episode three times in only 30 minutes! I recommend re-watching because each time you will pick up on different words.
For intermediate learners, I advise watching just once or twice and then moving on to another episode or cartoon. Beginners and intermediate learners alike should also write down new words and phrases that they learn and try to incorporate them in to your vocabulary. Also, write down things that you don’t understand. You can ask for help in the forums if you have a phrase or word that you can’t figure out.
However, if cartoons aren’t your thing and you want to stick with movies and television then I just have one word of advice: don’t use English subtitles. You may use Spanish subtitles but DO NOT use English ones. Your mind will completely block what is being said in Spanish because you will have plain English right in front of you.
To get you started here are some great web sites that do not spam you with pop-ups like many online video sites do:
- El Mundo de Bob Esponja – Sponge Bob
- Bob Esponja Online – Sponge Bob
- Los Simpsons – The Simpsons
- South Park
- ToonCast – Jonny Quest y Yogi Bear
- Cartoon Network – Johnny Bravo, Niño Ardillo, y Soy La Comadreja
Hopefully, that’s enough to get you started! This list might be short but it took me a few hours to put together, part because it’s hard to find cartoons in Spanish (not with Spanish subtitles) and also I watched a few!
So, please share your links if you have them of good sources to watch cartoons in Spanish online. We will all appreciate it.
And also here’s a cartoon in Spanish that you can watch right now! Enjoy the Pingüinos de Madagascar!
