Vosotros – To Learn or Not To Learn
I personally don’t recommend learning the vosotros conjugations of verbs. I never did and now I live in Spain which is the only place where the vosotros form of the verb is used. I understand it and the Spanish people understand me when I use ustedes. My take on it is that Spanish verbs are hard enough already, and there really is no point in learning the vosotros form when you can communicate just fine without it.
Sure, you may not sound like a Spanish person if you go to Spain, but honestly more than likely you wouldn’t either way. What I’m saying is that if you can communicate using ustedes just fine, well then just learn the that and don’t waste your time learning something else. Use that time learning vocabulary or phrases, which are never ending.
Now, I’m not saying that you should just forget completely about vosotros. For example, if you are planning a trip or moving to Spain, you should definetly at least be aware of the vosotros form so that might mean taking a look at it, but not so much as memorizing it enough to where you could produce it yourself. My Spanish friends will probably fuss at me for writing this, but Spanish is their native language and I don’t believe they understand the difficulty of Spanish verbs. If they only knew what they know!
Since I’m being just about completely biased telling you not to learn the vosotros verb conjugations, here is a nice article telling you to learn the vosotros forms. Just so that you can see for yourself both sides of the story. Really, it’s up to you if you decide to take your time to learn it or not.
